We have a long history of investigating, monitoring and modelling environmental change, generating evidence-driven solutions to complex environmental challenges. Watch our video to find out more about how our science is having a positive impact.
About the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH)
The UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology is a world-leading independent research institute, carrying out excellent environmental science with impact.

Soil conditions significantly increase megastorm rainfall
A new UKCEH-led study shows a large contrast in soil moisture levels over a range of hundreds of kilometres results in atmospheric changes that increase rainfall area and amount in several megastorm hotspots globally.

Strengthening scientific collaborations in West Africa
UKCEH is collaborating with UNESCO on a new initiative to strengthen the national Science, Technology and Innovation (ST&I) ecosystems in West Africa. It will unlock new opportunities for start-ups, researchers and investors.

Some insects are declining – what about the other 99%?
A study in the journal Science proposes a new approach to better monitor insect species and protect them. There is a lack of data on 99% of insect species including supposedly unpleasant but beneficial species such as cockroaches.
Our ambition
Our ambition is to make the world a better place through science addressing climate change, promoting biodiversity, and creating sustainable ecosystems.
