Professional summary

Dr Hermann Kam specialises in UK agricultural policy, with extensive experience in mixed-method social science research. His research focuses on increasing our understanding of the intersections between policy, land use and ecosystems. He seeks to incorporate a more interdisciplinary approach to examining the synergies and conflicts between agri-environmental policies, the farming sector and conservation efforts in the UK countryside. Hermann is co-lead for the social science aspect of a multi-disciplinary project, investigating what drives the uptake of net-zero farm innovation practices by farmers together with the social, economic and policy interventions needed to facilitate better uptake.

He was also an independent consultant for an EU Commission project which provided an initial perspective on England's agriculture policies since Brexit - from documenting the scheme design and development, to presenting a general assessment of impact these policies have on the environment, food security and farming sector. The report was presented to the EU Commission (DG AGRI) and to agriculture attachés of various EU member states.

Before this role, Hermann completed his PhD at the Centre for Environmental Policy, Imperial College London. His research investigated how the new suite of agri-environmental policies in the UK can accommodate for an increasingly diverse land management community, to achieve greater conservation outcome on a landscape scale in the English countryside.
