We are proud to demonstrate environmental leadership through our own actions; and are committed to carrying out our scientific research in a way that minimises our impact on the environment.

Our focus

In line with our ISO 14001 certified environmental management system, we have set ambitious environmental goals to enhance our sustainability efforts. Our focus is on the following areas:

Achieving net zero

We are actively pursuing new ways to decrease our dependence on fossil fuels. Our objective is to achieve net zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, and Scope 3 emissions by 2050.

Using resources efficiently

We are committed to the efficient use of resources and identifying further actions to minimise the environmental impacts of our research and operational activities, including from business travel.

Embedding sustainability within financial and procurement decisions

We are working with our partners and suppliers to prioritise use of consumables with reduced environmental impacts. Sustainability metrics are being integrated into our purchasing and finance processes.

Enhancing ecosystems and encouraging biodiversity on our sites

We are implementing measures across our office sites to support biodiversity, enhance ecosystem services, and prevent pollution.

Engaging our workforce and stakeholders

Our sustainability implementation and engagement plan is designed to involve all UKCEH colleagues in achieving our environmental goals.

Our Annual Report and Accounts reports our progress against these goals.

Concordat for the Environmental Sustainability of Research and Innovation Practice

UKCEH has been involved in the co-development of a voluntary environmental sustainability Concordat with the UK research and innovation sector. The Concordat represents a shared ambition for the UK to continue delivering cutting-edge research, in a more environmentally responsible and sustainable way.

Its aim is to ensure research and innovation continues to play a critical part in understanding how our planet is changing, while helping us to act responsibly to protect and promote our environment. Signatories commit to align with the science of climate change and ecology and to transparently share information and learnings about the environmental impacts of their work.

As one of the early signatories to Concordat, we call on others in the research and innovation sector to join us.
