John performs hydrological modelling of river flows using the distributed Grid-to-Grid (G2G) rainfall-runoff model and the lumped Probability Distributed Model (PDM). He is also involved with modelling and analysing data from Cosmic Ray Neutron Sensors (CRNS) which are deployed to measure soil moisture.
At UKCEH John has worked on a variety of projects, including: calibrating and assessing hydrological models; assessing X-band radar precipitation estimates using hydrological models; improving water routing in hydrological models; calculating and improving catchment descriptors such as FARL, SAAR and URBEXT; supporting use of machine learning techniques to quality control environmental data; using data from CRNS to estimate snow water equivalent; and, using neutron transport modelling to understand and control the footprint of CRNS for soil moisture monitoring; assessing the suitability of CRNS from the COSMOS-UK network for detecting space weather events.
John previously worked as theoretical physicist, employing a variety of analytical and numerical techniques to study two-dimensional materials and their heterostructures.
