2023 highlights
- We produced a major new report for IPBES, setting out the evidence and policy options to tackle the challenges posed by invasive alien species.
- We conducted a rapid remote assessment of the environmental impacts of the collapse of the Kakhovka Dam in Ukraine on behalf of the UK Government.
- Our grid-to-grid hydrological model and PREDICTOR tool assisted the Scottish Environment Protection Agency in their response to Storm Babet.
- A new report for the United Nations proposed strategies to halve nitrogen pollution from agriculture and food systems in Europe.
- We initiated trials to explore the potential of adding crushed rock dust to farmland has the potential to lock up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
- A long-term study revealed a resurgence in river invertebrate biodiversity across England since 1989, despite the pressures our rivers face.
- We announced a new partnership with Greensphere Capital LLP, a sustainability investor, who are raising a £150m fund to support science spin-out businesses.
- Our scientists published 430+ peer-reviewed journal papers, collaborating with researchers from 95 countries.
- We jointly supervised over 200 postgraduate researchers and participated in 14 NERC: Natural Environment Research Council Doctoral Training Partnerships and Centres for Doctoral Training.
- We were awarded silver accreditation from Investors in People for the second time, and our Disability Confident status was renewed.
