Ivan’s research focuses on the study of climate variability and change, with a particular emphasis on droughts.

He has studied droughts from different perspectives, including the identification, quantification and monitoring of droughts using numerous drought indicators, the characterisation of their spatio-temporal trends, the analysis of the atmospheric and oceanic mechanisms involved in their development, and the of assessment of drought attribution under global warming, among others. He has developed new methods and monitoring systems for the detection and tracking of “flash droughts” in order to improve the knowledge of this phenomenon under the current climate change scenario. He also addresses various drought-related issues from a multidisciplinary perspective at regional and global scales, which includes not only the meteorological and hydrological assessment, but also the evaluation of impacts (i.e., hydrological, agricultural and environmental) and the use of the generated knowledge to produce high spatial and temporal resolution datasets and drought monitoring tools.
