Short course description:

UKCEH's GWAVA (Global Water Availability Assessment) model provides integrated analysis of water supply and demand at national to continental scales. GWAVA can be configured with both locally sourced data and global databases, making it ideal for application in data-sparse regions. Tailored scenarios can be modelled to give projections of future changes to water availability, along with consequential impacts.
This interactive course will teach you the knowledge and skills you need to develop a large-scale hydrological model using a combination of presentations and practical exercises.

Learning outcome:

By the end of the course, you will have the knowledge and skills to apply the GWAVA model to a river catchment of your choosing.

Course objectives:

  1. Concepts of hydrological modelling
  2. The GWAVA water resources model
  3. Model input and data preparation
  4. Model application, calibrating and running the GWAVA water resources model
  5. Analysing and displaying model output
  6. Further model application

Target audience:

  • National hydrological and meteorological services and agencies in data sparse regions
  • Charities working in the development sector
  • Consultants
  • PhD and academics preparing to work on drought in a ‘developing country’ context

Level:

Previous knowledge of modelling concepts and handling data (excel, GIS) would be an advantage/ beneficial.
