Professional summary
Jamie Hannaford is a Principal Hydrologist who has over two decades experience at UKCEH working on all aspects of hydro-climatic variability and change. He is also a visiting Associate Professor at the Irish Climate And Research Units (ICARUS) at Maynooth University, Ireland.
Jamie is the scientific lead for UKCEH’s National Capability water monitoring work in the programme UK-SCAPE. Within this, he is also the scientific lead for the UK National River Flow Archive (NRFA) and the UK Hydrological Outlook, providing seasonal hydrological forecasts for the UK. He contributes to the National Hydrological Monitoring Programme, providing commentary on current hydrological status and investigating long-term change.
He is a leader for HydroJULES Work Package 5, Applications, and co-leads CANARI's Work Package 2, Floods and droughts. Other UK projects Jamie has led recently include eFLaG, delivering a national dataset of future hydrological projections, and the ‘water availability’ component of CS-N0W.
He leads drought research initiatives in the UK and internationally. He chaired the UKRI Droughts and Water Scarcity Programme Co-ordination Team overseeing £12.5m of UK drought research and was Lead-PI on ‘Historic Droughts’ and on the £2m knowledge exchange project ‘ENDOWS’, as well as the Belmont Forum project ‘DrIVER’.
Jamie also leads and contributes to a number of international projects and programmes focused on drought, in India, China, Thailand and Myanmar. He leads Theme 3, adaptation, in UKCEH’s National Capability programme ‘international science for Net Zero plus’. He also leads the ROBIN initiative, developing a global network of near-natural catchments for hydroclimate trend detection.
