Professional summary
Peter has worked at UKCEH since 1995 on a wide variety of projects, mostly associated with the habitat quality and macrophyte communities of rivers and streams.
In his early career he was closely involved with the development of River Habitat Survey (RHS), a methodology that assesses and characterises the physical character of rivers. From this he developed an interest in both fluvial geomorphology and the macrophyte populations of rivers and streams.
He has managed projects on geomorphological and habitat assessments of river catchments as well as surveys to categorise freshwater botanical communities. He is a very experienced field surveyor, having been involved in the collection and analysis of terrestrial and aquatic field data from thousands of sites in various habitats, in the UK and abroad.
Peter’s current roles at UKCEH include invertebrate, RHS, macrophyte and diatom surveys on streams and ponds for the Environment and Rural Affairs Monitoring & Modelling Programme (ERAMMP) project, botanical and soil surveys for the Countryside Survey project, the COSMOS Soil Moisture Monitoring Network and quality control of river flow data for the National River Flow Archive.
Peter is a member of the Royal Society of Biology and a chartered biologist.
